Hello from California! My name is Bethani, and I'm an avid cosplayer and sewist. I've been sewing my own cosplays since 2012, mostly anime characters but thanks to my friends I've begun to really branch out. My sewing started young, when my grandma taught me to make doll clothes, but it wasn't until 2012 where I really took an interest in sewing and really found my passion for it. Since then, my skills have only continued to grow and I've continued to challenge myself. I'm even currently in the last few classes of a BA in Costume Design because I found sewing to be what makes me absolutely happy. I've branched out making my own everyday clothes more and have even begun learning to quilt since I started working at a quilt store!

I found Tailor's Gone Wild during my research for TNG Star Trek patterns since I recently joined my friends' shuttle of the 1701st Fleet. As someone who loves to make my cosplays and costumes as accurate as possible, I became supper excited and immediately shared this resource with The Fleet. The 1701st Fleet is kind of like the Star Trek of the 501st Legion.

My favorite cosplays are usually ones that contain lots of details. I love really putting my all into what I make and going a bit more for something extra. My Squirrel Girl tail is a great example because I wanted one that would have more motion than a plain stationary tail. Or my Hakudoshi from Inuyasha, in which I spent weeks researching Edo period traditional garbs looking for what was closest to his and then making the multi-layer costume rather than using fake cut-outs based on historc garment resources.

I have many cosplay goals, but they come down to that I want to continue to grow, make friends, and have fun! I love everyone I've met through cosplay and conventions. And the confidence I have gained through my work as a cosplayer. I want to continue to griw and challenge myself. My dream is to place in a large scale masquerade some day. Amd although I may never be a ‘professional cosplayer' I never want to give up this hobby that I love so much!

I'm excited to meet everyone and I hope we can all learn and grow from one another!

Hi Bethani, and welcome to the forum!

I think it's great that you enjoy sewing so much and have branched out from costumes to “everyday” clothes as well.

Thank you for sharing my patterns/resources with your 1701st fleet.

And in my opinion, unless it's a life goal (or some such thing) for you, it doesn't really matter whether or not you're a “professional cosplayer” or not, as long as you're enjoying yourself – which it sounds like you are. 🙂
